Environmental Services
Environment is everything that is around us. It is comprised of complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival. Environment includes the physical factors of the surroundings of human beings including land, water, atmosphere, climate, sound, odour, taste, the biological factors of animals and plants and the social factor of aesthetics and includes both the natural and the built environment.
NICI is established considering the Sustainable development goals. The environmental dimension of the SDGs focuses on:
- pursuing high standards of water and air quality,
- tackling pollution from toxic chemicals,
- pursuing sustainable transport and renewable energy, and
- tackling the environmental impacts of cities.
The environmental services offered by NICI includes;
Environmental Scoping: Environmental Scoping involves the identification of key environmental and social issues, undertakin preliminary consultations and identifying concerns of various stakeholders.
Environmental and Social Impact Assessment: This is conducted to determine whether or not a programme, activity or project will have any adverse impacts on the environment and propose the mitigation measures.
Environmental Audit and Monitoring: This involves the systematic evaluation of activities and processes of an ongoing project to determine how far these activities and programmes conform with the approved environmental management plan of that specific
project and sound environmental management practices.
Monitoring means the continuous or periodic determination of actual and potential effects of any activity or phenomenon of the environment whether short-term or long-term.
Occupational health and safety Audits: The audits are carried out to check the welfare of people at work. Most of the work places have a set OHS programs. The goals of occupational safety and health programs include to foster a safe and healthy work environment.
Site Assessments: Site assessment is carried out to identify potential or existing environmental contamination liabilities. The actual sampling of soil, air, groundwater and surface water is carried out, analysed and results interpreted.
Risk Assessments: the study involves determining the probability of occurrence of an adverse effect from a substance on people or the environment combined with the magnitude of the consequence of that adverse effect.
Strategic Environmental Assessment: The study involves the process of subjecting public policy, programmes and plans to tests for compliance with sound environmental management.
Other Environmental services offered includes; Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment study, Climate Change and Disaster Management and Environmental Monitoring and evaluation of projects.
