Waste Management Services

Waste is any organic or inorganic matter either gaseous, liquid or solid, discarded after use, expired or defective and cannot be reapplied in its current state or quantity to the generating activity. Wastes mainly originate from residential (domestic waste), commercial or industrial and Mining (including waste exploration, drilling and production) processes.

Waste management on the other hand encompasses the systems applied to control waste production (reducing production of waste), its handling (collection, storage, transportation, processing (recycling, reusing, composting, recovering), and disposal of the wastes in an acceptable manner as stipulated by the local and international regulations.

Proper waste management approaches must be structured within the International and local laws and should be characterized by the following key elements;

Waste Management Options

a) Avoidance and Reduction
Processes, systems, and products must be designed in a manner that minimizes their waste components, the material quantities applied to production and the potential toxicity of waste generated during production, and after use.

b) Re-use
Materials can be used for similar or different purposes without changing form or properties. This approach seeks to re-use a product when it reaches the end of its life span. In this way, it becomes input for new products and materials.

c) Recycle
This involves separating materials from the waste stream and processing them as products or raw materials. The first elements of the waste management hierarchy are the foundation of the cradle-to-cradle waste management approach.

d) Recovery
Reclaiming particular components or materials of a waste stream to create new outputs. An example is the reusing of waste as a fuel or recovery of nutrients from wastewater.

e) Treatment and disposal
This is a ‘last resort’ within the waste hierarchy. Treatment refers to any process that is designed to minimize the environmental impact of waste by changing the physical properties of waste or separating out and destroying toxic components of waste. Disposal refers specifically to the depositing or burial of waste onto, or into land.

NICI understands the above in the provision of waste management services. Our services include;

1. Onsite Waste management and Recycling

a) Segregation, waste sorting and Recycling
In the hierarchy of waste management recycling is the third option of waste disposal. NICI’s integrated waste management provides for onsite waste management. This involves waste management at the site which is produced. This allows for waste segregation and sorting. These wastes can be reused or recovered, they include; Waste Oil, eWaste, Paper, Plastic, Glass, Wood, Metals, Textiles, Fluorescent tubes, and Batteries

b) Composting
Food waste is generated daily everywhere, NICI understands the benefits of such wastes. We turn the waste into a usable byproduct, manure. This is done through natural and a mechanical way.

2. Hazardous Waste Management

a) Emergency Response
Spill emergencies varies from mild to dangerous. NICI has the capability of handling any emergency of any magnitude.

The response involves three phases; Responding, Containment and Clean-up Phase

b) Handling and disposal of Expired and Obsolete Chemicals
In handling the chemicals NICI understands the need to identify the chemicals to determine the appropriate disposal method. This involves obtaining the MSDS for the chemicals and also carrying out laboratory analysis on the same. This minimizes the risks associated with the chemicals. NICI disposes the chemicals as per the NEMA requirements and as per the international set standards

c) Asbestos removal and Disposal
Our services include; Stripping of loose/free (the raw/unprocessed product), processed solid/binded (roof, ceiling boards etc and boiler cladding asbestos and asbestos removal advisory services.

d) Bioremediation of Contaminated Soils
Bioremediation is a process of using microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) or plants to detoxify or remove organic and inorganic contaminants from the environment. It is a remediation option that offers green technology solution to the problem of hydrocarbon and heavy metals contamination. Bioremediation is used to treat the contaminated media including water, soil and sub surface material by altering the environmental conditions to simulate growth of microorganism and degrade the target pollutants

NICI believes in bioremediation as a safe method of treating contaminated media. Our technical experts provide both technical and operational advisory and services

e) Oil and Chemical spill clean ups
NICI understands that environmental clean-up is devised from the Environmental Site Assessment. The assessment is carried out to determine the extent of the contamination and indicate the contaminants. The clean-up method shall be based on the assessment findings. Our clean-up shall be carried out and the results compared to existing local and international standards. NICI encourages the external monitoring to assess the progress of the clean-up

f) Reservoir, Tank and Industrial Cleaning
Reservoir, Tank and Industrial Cleaning involves mainly working in confined spaces. This requires highly trained personnel and equipment. NICI has the capacity to carryout the above within the client’s specifications and within the shortest time possible. Our cleaning services includes;

NICI also offers other waste services including; design of Wastewater treatment systems and Biodigesters and Technical Waste and Waste Management advisory
